The main takeaway: you must verify email address without sending email to protect your domain reputation. Sending cold emails to unverified lists will trigger spam filters almost immediately.

Methodology

How we conducted the study

To establish a credible baseline for 2026, the InboxCheck research team conducted a controlled micro study. We did not use aged databases. Instead, we simulated a standard SDR workflow: finding prospects in a data tool and exporting them for outreach.

We gathered exactly 3,000 emails across the SaaS, Healthcare, and Financial Services sectors. Every single contact was then run through the InboxCheck verification engine for deep SMTP and domain validation.

Detailed breakdown by provider

Apollo.io

Apollo is an incredible tool for finding prospects. However, their database is massive, which means data decay is inevitable as people change jobs. If you send a campaign to 1,000 Apollo contacts without a secondary check, you could hit over 90 hard bounces. This is enough to severely damage your sender reputation during gmail outreach campaigns.

LinkedIn Scrapers

Safe (77.5%)Invalid (16.2%)Risky (6.3%)

Scraping emails from LinkedIn profiles relies heavily on pattern guessing algorithms. Because people rarely update their contact information publicly, the accuracy drops significantly. LinkedIn is excellent for building your prospect list, but you absolutely need to use a dedicated email address verification tool before you add these contacts to your CRM.

ZoomInfo

3.3%
Safe (91.2%)Invalid (5.5%)Risky (3.3%)

As a premium enterprise provider, ZoomInfo performed the best in our test. Their data refresh cycles are more aggressive, resulting in higher accuracy. Even so, a 5.5% invalid rate on a 10,000 contact campaign means 550 potential bounces, which is well above the safe threshold for most email service providers.

By Sector

Invalid rates by industry

IndustrySafeInvalidRisky
SaaS / Technology86.1%9.4%4.5%
Healthcare79.3%14.8%5.9%
Financial Services88.7%7.2%4.1%

Healthcare showed the highest invalid rate due to frequent staff turnover and strict domain security policies. Financial Services performed best, likely because of slower employee churn and well-maintained corporate domains.

Analysis

The true cost of unverified data

The era of "spray and pray" is completely over. Email service providers like Google and Outlook now enforce strict bounce rate thresholds. If your campaigns consistently hit a bounce rate above 3%, your domain will be flagged and your future messages will land in spam.

When you send cold emails, you are putting your entire company domain at risk. A single high-bounce campaign can take weeks to recover from. The only way to maintain your sender reputation is to catch bad data before it enters your outbound sequence.

What a 3% threshold means in practice

1,000 emails sentMax 30 bounces
5,000 emails sentMax 150 bounces
10,000 emails sentMax 300 bounces
Our audit found average invalid rates between 5.5% and 16.2% across providers, all exceeding the safe 3% threshold.
Recommendation

The inline solution

You do not need to export massive CSV files and wait hours to clean your lists. With our email verification chrome extension, you can verify prospect emails instantly as you browse Apollo, LinkedIn, or any website.

When you see an interesting profile, simply hover over the contact. InboxCheck provides free email verification credits so you can check the validity of the address directly on the page. Stop guessing. Verify your emails where you work and keep your bounce rate at zero.
